The Notations connector for Claude
Connect your Notations notebook to Claude and work with your notes in any chat — search, read, create, edit, and organize, all scoped to your own account.
What it is
Notations exposes a remote MCP server so Claude can read and write the notes in your Notations account on your behalf. It is a personal, single-user connection: you sign in with your own Notations account, and Claude only ever sees your notes — never anyone else’s. Every request is scoped to your account at the database level.
Setup
- In Claude, go to Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector.
- Paste the server URL:
https://notations.app/api/mcp/mcp - Click Connect. You’ll be sent to Notations to sign in with Google or Apple and approve access. After that, the notes tools are available in any chat.
You can also copy the URL from Settings inside Notations.
Authentication
The connector uses OAuth 2.1 with PKCE. Claude registers dynamically, you complete a normal sign-in and consent flow, and Claude receives a short-lived access token (refreshed automatically). No API keys to copy or paste. To disconnect, remove the connector in Claude. Signing out of Notations does not disconnect it.
What Claude can do
The connector provides read and write tools. Read tools never change anything; write tools are annotated so Claude (and you) can see which ones create, modify, or delete content.
Read
- Browse and list notes — recent, published, pinned, snoozed, by folder, or the whole title index.
- Search — full-text search, plus meaning-based semantic search and “find related notes” when a note doesn’t contain the literal words.
- Read full note bodies (one, many, or a whole folder at once), list folders and tags, and get a one-call overview of the whole notebook.
Write
- Create notes and add iterations (revisions/alternates) to existing ones.
- Edit a note’s title, body, tags, folder, or publish/pin/share state.
- Move, snooze, or delete notes; create, rename, or delete folders.
- Upload an image — a file Claude has, or one from a public web address — and add it to a note.
Example prompts
Once connected, try:
- “Give me an overview of my notebook — how many notes, the date range, and my busiest folders and tags.”
- “Search my notes for everything I’ve written about agent memory and summarize the throughline across them.”
- “Create a note titled ‘Q3 planning’ in my Work folder with these three priorities: …”
- “Find the notes most related to my ‘Burnout’ note and tell me how my thinking changed over time.”
- “Read my ‘Weekly review’ note, tighten the prose, and save it back.”
Data handling
The connector talks only to your own Notations account. Reads return note content and metadata to Claude for the request you make; writes are the changes you ask for. Notations sends connector requests nowhere else, with two exceptions you control: if you turned on semantic search with your own OpenAI key, a meaning-based search sends its query text to OpenAI to match it against your notes; and when you ask Claude to add an image from a web address, Notations fetches that one address to copy the image into your storage. Uploaded images are stored like the ones you add in the app: anyone with an image’s link can open it. No analytics or tracking, and no training on your notes. See the Privacy policy for what data is stored, retention, and deletion.
