Notations respects copyright and expects the people who use it to do the same. Notes can only be published or shared by someone who has the right to do so (see the Terms of Use). If you believe a note, image or page on notations.app or notes.fieldlines.org infringes your copyright, send a notice to our designated agent and we’ll respond under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. § 512).

Email is fastest. This address is for copyright notices only; anything else goes to the contact on the Terms page. The in-app Report button is for the other rules in the Terms and is not a copyright notice.

Sending a notice

Your notice must include:

  1. your physical or electronic signature, as the copyright owner or someone authorized to act for them;
  2. the copyrighted work you believe is infringed (or, for several works, a representative list);
  3. the material you believe infringes it, with the link to each note or file so we can find it;
  4. your name, postal address, phone number and email address;
  5. a statement that you believe in good faith the use isn’t authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law;
  6. a statement that the information in your notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the owner or authorized to act for the owner.

A notice missing these may not be acted on. Knowingly misrepresenting that material infringes can make you liable for damages (17 U.S.C. § 512(f)), so if you’re unsure whether a use is infringing, consider getting advice first.

What happens next

When we receive a complete notice we promptly remove the material or take it out of public view, and we tell the person who posted it, including a copy of the notice. That copy includes your name and the details of your claim.

Counter-notice

If your material was removed and you believe that was a mistake or a misidentification, you can send a counter-notice to the same agent. It must include:

  1. your physical or electronic signature;
  2. the material that was removed and the link where it appeared before removal;
  3. a statement, under penalty of perjury, that you believe in good faith the material was removed by mistake or misidentification;
  4. your name, postal address and phone number, and a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the federal district court for your address (or, outside the United States, any judicial district where Notations may be found), and that you will accept service of process from the person who sent the original notice.

We send the counter-notice to the person who filed the original notice. Unless they tell us within 10 business days that they have filed a court action to stop the infringement, we restore the material 10 to 14 business days after receiving your counter-notice.

Repeat infringers

We suspend the accounts of people who repeatedly infringe copyright. A suspended account can’t sign in, and none of its notes stay published or shared.
