Obsidian can be simple, connected, and shared
You do not have to install plugins to use Obsidian for basic notes. Its official cloud services support syncing and publishing, and its plugin ecosystem can support additional AI workflows. Those integrations should be evaluated individually for setup, access, and cost.
Notations provides remote MCP access directly, plus an optional in-app assistant using your provider key. That can be useful if you want your existing assistant to work with notes without assembling a vault integration. See the actual setup.
Which should you choose?
Choose Obsidian if your priority is a local file vault, extensive customization, or a workspace built around plugins and visual connections.
Choose Notations if you want a browser-accessible personal notebook with cloud sync, readable links, related pages, and a direct connection to your assistant.

Try a small collection before moving
Bring a representative selection of Markdown files into Notations and check formatting, links, and attachments. Plugins, graph behavior, and other vault-specific functionality do not transfer as working features. Keep the original vault while you evaluate. Read the import guide.
